How to Choose a Reputable Cavapoo Breeder — And Red Flags to Avoid

How to Choose a Reputable Cavapoo Breeder — And Red Flags to Avoid

Finding a Cavapoo puppy isn't hard. Finding a good Cavapoo breeder — one you can actually trust — that's where it gets tricky. The internet is full of listings, websites, and social media pages that all look legitimate on the surface. But not all of them are.

I'm Daxon Weaver, and my family has been raising Cavapoos here at Weaver Family Farms in Missouri for years. I've heard from families who got burned by bad breeders before they found us — puppies with serious health problems, breeders who disappeared after the sale, dogs that were nothing like what was advertised. It's heartbreaking every time.

So I want to give you the real, honest guide to choosing a Cavapoo breeder — what to look for, what to ask, and what should send you running the other direction. This is the article I wish every family read before they started their search.

Your Trusted Cavapoo Breeder in Missouri - Weaver Family Farms

Why Choosing the Right Breeder Matters So Much

The breeder you choose determines almost everything about your puppy's start in life — their health, their temperament, how well they're socialized, and whether they come with hidden problems that show up months or years later.

A well-bred Cavapoo from a responsible breeder is a joy to own. A poorly bred one from a puppy mill or backyard breeder can come with genetic health issues, anxiety, behavioral problems, and vet bills that pile up fast. The price difference between a reputable breeder and a cheap listing online might seem significant upfront — but it's nothing compared to what a sick or poorly socialized puppy can cost you down the road.

Green Flags — What a Good Breeder Looks Like

They Are State-Licensed and Open About It

In Missouri, breeders who sell puppies are required to be licensed by the state. A reputable breeder will tell you their license number without hesitation. If a breeder gets evasive when you ask about licensing, that's a problem. At Weaver Family Farms, we are fully state-licensed and proud of it — it's one of the ways we hold ourselves accountable to a higher standard of care.

Puppies Are Raised in a Clean, Family Environment

Where a puppy spends their first 8 weeks of life shapes them for the rest of it. Puppies raised in a warm, clean, family environment — with daily human interaction, household sounds, and loving attention — grow up to be confident, well-adjusted dogs. Puppies raised in crowded cages or isolated kennels often struggle with anxiety and socialization for years.

Our puppies are born and raised in our fully heated and air-conditioned kennel building. Our dogs have 24/7 access to food, water, and the freedom to go in and out whenever they want. From day one, our puppies are handled daily by our family — not hired staff.

They Can Tell You About the Parent Dogs

A responsible breeder selects their parent dogs carefully — based on health, temperament, and genetic background, not just looks or availability. They should be able to tell you about both parents: their personalities, their health history, and why they were chosen for breeding. If a breeder can't or won't tell you anything about the parents, walk away.

Every Puppy Gets a Vet Wellness Exam Before Going Home

This is non-negotiable. Every puppy at Weaver Family Farms gets a full wellness exam from our veterinarian before leaving our farm. They also receive their initial vaccinations and go home with a health guarantee. If a breeder can't confirm their puppies have been vet-checked, that's a serious red flag.

They Have Real Reviews From Real Families

Any breeder can write nice things about themselves on their own website. What matters is what their customers say. Look for detailed, genuine reviews from families who have actually adopted from them. At Weaver Family Farms, we have a full Reviews page where you can read real experiences from real families across the country.

They Stay in Touch After the Sale

A breeder who truly cares about their puppies doesn't disappear the moment you drive away. We're always available to answer questions after adoption — whether it's a week later or a year later. That ongoing relationship matters to us because we genuinely care about where our puppies end up.

Red Flags — What Should Send You Running

Puppies Are Always Available, No Waiting

Responsible breeders plan their litters carefully. They don't have an endless supply of puppies available at all times. If a breeder always has puppies ready to go with no waiting period, that's often a sign of a high-volume puppy mill operation where the welfare of the dogs is not the priority. At Weaver Family Farms, we're a small operation — we have waiting lists because we breed responsibly, not constantly.

No Health Guarantee

A reputable breeder stands behind their puppies. If a breeder offers no health guarantee whatsoever, that tells you everything you need to know about how much they care about the animals they're selling. Our puppies come with a health guarantee because we're confident in the care we put into every litter.

They Won't Let You Ask Questions or Visit

Good breeders welcome questions. They want to make sure their puppies are going to great homes, which means they're just as interested in you as you are in them. If a breeder is evasive, rushes you, or refuses to let you see where the puppies are raised, that's a major warning sign. We encourage families to reach out with as many questions as they have — we love talking about our dogs.

No Information About the Parents

If a breeder can't tell you anything meaningful about the puppy's parents — their health, temperament, or background — that's a problem. Responsible breeders are proud of their breeding dogs and happy to share that information.

The Price Seems Too Good to Be True

A well-bred Cavapoo from a reputable, licensed breeder costs what it costs because of the care, health testing, vet visits, quality nutrition, and time that goes into raising each puppy properly. If a price seems shockingly low, ask yourself why. Cutting corners on breeding always costs someone — usually the puppy, and eventually you.

No Online Presence or Verifiable Reviews

In today's world, a legitimate breeder has a real online presence — a website, reviews, photos, and a track record you can verify. Be very cautious of breeders who exist only as a Craigslist post or a Facebook listing with no history behind them.

Questions to Ask Any Breeder Before You Commit

Here's a list of questions we'd encourage you to ask any breeder — including us. A good breeder will answer every single one without hesitation:

  • Are you state-licensed? What is your license number?
  • Can you tell me about the puppy's parents — their health and temperament?
  • Do the puppies receive a vet wellness exam before going home?
  • What vaccinations will the puppy have received?
  • Do you offer a health guarantee? What does it cover?
  • Where are the puppies raised? Can I see photos or video of the environment?
  • How do you socialize your puppies before they go home?
  • Are you available for questions after the adoption?
  • Can I read reviews from previous adopters?

Understanding Cavapoo Generations — F1, F1b, and Beyond

F1 Cavapoo: A first-generation cross — one Cavalier King Charles Spaniel parent and one Poodle parent. These tend to have a wavy coat and are a great balance of both breeds.

F1b Cavapoo: An F1 Cavapoo bred back to a Poodle. These tend to have a curlier, more hypoallergenic coat and are often preferred by families with stronger allergy concerns.
